About Gateshead:

Gateshead has recently seen a cultural revival. Building on the success of the Metro Centre and the International Stadium, the council has lately invested in riverside re-developments that include the Millennium Bridge, built in 2001. The bridge won the James Stirling Prize for Architecture in 2002.  Gateshead Quays was a wealthy settlement during Roman times and is now the historic centre of the area. During the Industrial Revolution it became a major hub for industries in the North East due to it's good sized port. The area went into decline in the 1970's as industry began to wither. Today however it is being converted into an arts and cultural space destined to be one of the best in Europe. See the Google map of the Gateshead area
